Hallways - Islands

So it’s been a while. I’ve always appreciated piano-heavy music. This song is so fantastically put together, and has a great musical arch, and uses the piano extremely well. Well done Islands.

Saw Beirut this summer. Probably one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. They played this, and it was incredible.

Fumblin’ with the Blues - Tom Waits

I’ve been neglecting this blog, so I’ve returned. I found The Heart of Saturday Night in a box in my basement a couple weeks ago, and have listening to this song non-stop since.

The Ballad of Oregon - River City Extension

I went to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival this weekend, and ended up seeing a lot of acts that I had not anticipated seeing, because of how my volunteer shifts lined up. My absolute favourite band that I stumbled upon was River City Extension. They were having a sort of jam session with Good For Grapes, and Geoff Berner, and it was probably the hi-light of the festival for me. Each band did one or two songs, and then they all the the Decemberists’ ‘The Mariner’s Revenge’ at the end. All the bands were amazing live, but this one had a particularly amazing energy in their performance.

Two Against One (ft. Jack White)  - Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi

I realized that this blog was severely lacking in Jack White, so here is a great collaboration he did with Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi for Rome.

About As Helpful As You Can Be Without Being Any Help At All - Dan Mangan

Great song from Dan Mangan’s newest album. Fantastic Vancouver talent.

Eugene McGuinness - Blue Jeans (Lana Del Rey Cover)

I love Eugene McGuinness, and don’t care too much for Lana Del Rey, therefore with my biased opinion, I would have to say that this is better than the original.

Southern Point - Grizzly Bear

Super excellent song by Grizzly Bear for the album Veckatimest. I’d recommend the whole album, since all the songs are great. This one is my favourite because I like the pacing, if that makes sense. It has a great sense of movement.

City Lights Cry - Armistice

This song comes from an awesome, and unfortunately short album. Six great songs. Armistice is a collaboration between the wonderful Beatrice Martin and Jay Malinowski. They work well together, and I’m a sucker for duets.
